Backpacking 101 on South Manitou Island

We're leaving the bikes behind and instead grabbing our packs to help you discover the fun of backpacking! Join us as we backpack and explore Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

Our weekend will begin with a night of camping at Platte River Campground in Beulah. We'll enjoy social time and snacks around a toasty campfire before we provide tips and tricks on how to organize your packs so they are comfortable and lightweight. We will be providing all the food for the weekend but it will be up to each participant to pack their own portions for the weekend and will spend some time teaching ways to pack nutritiously dense, lightweight backpacking meals.

On Saturday morning, we'll rise early to enjoy a hot breakfast, breakdown tents, repack and make the 45 minute drive to Leland where we'll catch the ferry to South Manitou Island. Once we land on the island, we'll hike the 1.5 miles in to the Weather Station Campground, where we'll set up camp for the night. From there we'll spend the day exploring the island's many trails and natural features. We'll also spend some time journaling and in quiet reflection.

Sunday morning, we'll pack up our tents and enjoy some more hiking around the island before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

This trip will be co-guided by Nicole Coss, seasoned adventurer and backpacker. Nicole spent a great deal of her youth running through the woods, learning how to slalom waterski, and tackling the best skiing that Northern Michigan had to offer. During that time, she developed a love for the outdoors and experienced the health benefits of an active outdoor lifestyle. She backpacks regularly with a close-knit group of women all over Michigan.

Nicole attended Michigan State University where she earned a degree in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science. She is now a school counselor by day, and a wife and mother to two teenage daughters by night.

She is excited to be involved with Moxie Wild.  She is passionate about helping women develop their outdoor confidence.   She believes there is great power that comes from surrounding yourself with women that are not afraid to step outside their comfort zone and are willing to learn how amazing they are. She feels most at peace when her feet are dirty, and her hair is messy, and she is on a trail.

The $200 registration includes your campsite fees for both nights, all meals, roundtrip ferry ticket, National Park entrance fees for both Platte River Campground and South Manitou Island.
